How to Cook Chicken Cordon Bleu in an Air Fryer?

While many steps are involved, believe it or not, this recipe is still a breeze to make. Simply follow these simple steps, and you’ll be golden.

1. Set up the breading station first.

You need three shallow dishes for this. Add the following in each of the containers:

  1. All-purpose flour.
  2. Egg, crack, and beat it.
  3. Breadcrumbs and parmesan, whisk until uniform.

2. Prepare the chicken.

Now, place a chicken breast on a clean cutting board. Carefully cut horizontally through the thickest part of the chicken breast. Do not cut all the way through; only until you can open up the chicken like a book.

Butterfly cut technique - chicken breast

Then, cover the chicken breast with a sheet of plastic wrap or wax paper. This’ll prevent any splatters.

Pound the chicken breast gently with a meat mallet or a rolling pin. Start from the thickest part of the chicken and work toward the edges. Continue pounding until the chicken breast is uniformly about 1/2 inch thick.

Flattening the chicken breast filets with a mallet.

Note: If the butterfly cut makes the chicken thin enough, you don’t have to pound it.

Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper. Then, place 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese on one side of each chicken breast.

Roll up the chicken breast and secure it with toothpicks to seal the edges.

🚨 Important! Don’t forget to remove the toothpick later before serving.

3. Preheat your air fryer to 380ºF (193ºC).

Preating Instant Pot Vortex Plus Air Fryer to 380°F (193°C).

If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheating option, set your desired temperature then let it cook for 5 minutes without food.

🚨 Important: Reduce the cooking temperature to 380°F (193°C) if you’re using a 4-quart air fryer or smaller. They are hotter due to the heating element being closer to the food.

4. Bread the Chicken.

Dip each rolled chicken breast into flour, coating it evenly. Shake off any excess.

Next, wet the chicken into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. Let any excess drip off before the next step.

Transfer the chicken to the breadcrumb mixture. Press the breadcrumbs to ensure it sticks to the chicken.

5. Air Fry the Chicken Cordon Bleu for 20 – 25 minutes at 380ºF (193ºC).

Place the breaded chicken breasts in the air fryer, ensuring enough space between them for optimal air circulation.

Then, spray with avocado oil. This simple step will enhance the appearance and elevate the overall texture and flavor of your Chicken Cordon Bleu.

Cook for 20 – 25 minutes at 380ºF (193ºC), flipping them halfway through for even cooking.

🚨 Important! Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of the cordon bleu and the specific air fryer model you’re using.

Thus, keep an eye on your air fryer throughout the cooking time to prevent overcooking. It’s ready once your Chicken Cordon Bleu reaches that golden hue and the internal temperature reads 165°F (74°C).

💡 Pro Tip: If you have a meat thermometer, use it to check the internal temperature of the chicken. This way, you can be sure that your Chicken Cordon Bleu is perfectly cooked and safe to enjoy!

6. Make the Cream Sauce:

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat until it’s beautifully melted.

Next, add the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. This helps create a smooth and flavorful base for our sauce.

Fun fact: that combination is called roux, the common base for many delicious sauces like Béchamel.

Gradually whisk in the milk, and watch as the sauce thickens and takes shape. Keep whisking to ensure a lump-free, velvety texture.

Once the milk is fully incorporated, add our star ingredient – dijon mustard! Pour in that tangy goodness and continue stirring until the sauce becomes lusciously creamy.

7. Serve & enjoy!

Once the chicken is perfectly crispy and cooked through, remove it from the air fryer. Then, retrieve the toothpicks and serve them hot with the creamy Dijon mustard sauce drizzled on top.

That’s how you make an air fried chicken cordon bleu, quick and easy!

What to Serve with Chicken Cordon Bleu Air Fryer?

Complete your delightful meal by pairing Cordon Bleu with these tasty sides:

  • Garlic butter rice: Fluffy and fragrant, this rice perfectly complements the rich flavors of the chicken.
  • Garlic roasted asparagus: Tender and seasoned to perfection, it adds a touch of green goodness to your plate.
  • Classic Caesar salad: A refreshing salad with crisp romaine lettuce, croutons, and a creamy Caesar dressing. By the way, you can air fry homemade croutons, which is much better than store-bought.

Freezing & Storage

Freezing: You can freeze the cooked chicken cordon bleu for up to 3 months. To do this, place them in an airtight container or wrap them tightly with plastic wrap.

When ready to cook, air fry from frozen at 400ºF (177ºC) for 15 – 20 minutes, flipping them halfway. Ensure it’s cooked through, not frozen in the middle.

You can also thaw the frozen cordon bleu in the refrigerator overnight. The next day, you can reheat the chicken in the preheated air fryer at 380ºF (193ºC) for 10 – 15 minutes or until it’s heated through and the breading turns crispy.

Fridge: Keep cooked leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, air fry at 380ºF (193ºC) for 10 – 15 minutes until heated through.

Now you can enjoy this delicious recipe anytime, even on busy days! 🍽️

Chicken cordon bleu:

  • 2 chicken breasts
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 egg beaten
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
  • Avocado oil for spray

Cream sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

  • Set up the breading station. In three shallow dishes, add flour, beaten egg in the second one, and combine breadcrumbs and grated parmesan cheese in the last.
  • Prep the chicken. Place the chicken on a cutting board. Make a horizontal slit on the side of each chicken breast for a butterfly cut.
  • (Optional) Pound the chicken to make it thinner. Cover the chicken with plastic wrap. With a meat mallet (or a rolling pin), gently pound the chicken until it reaches a 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Season the butterflied chicken breasts with salt and pepper, ensuring both sides are evenly coated.
  • Add 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese to each chicken breast. Roll up the chicken and secure it with toothpicks to seal the edges.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 380ºF (193ºC).
  • Bread the chicken. Dip each chicken into the flour, shaking off excess. Next, dip into the beaten egg. Finally, transfer the chicken to the breadcrumb mixture, pressing the breadcrumbs to adhere.
  • Place the breaded chicken breasts in the air fryer, ensuring they don't overlap. Spray the breaded chicken breasts with avocado oil.
  • Air fry cordon bleu at 380ºF (193ºC) for 20 – 25 minutes, flipping them halfway through for even cooking. Then, spray with more avocado oil, so both sides will be golden brown.
  • Make the creamy dijon sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. While constantly stirring, add in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Pour the milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Add Dijon mustard and cook until it thickens.
  • Check the internal temperature of the cordon bleu using a meat thermometer to ensure it's fully cooked (165°F or 74°C). Then, remove from the air fryer and remove the toothpicks.
  • Serve and enjoy the Air Fried Chicken Cordon Bleu with the creamy Dijon mustard sauce drizzled on top.

  • Remember that cooking durations may differ depending on the chicken’s thickness and your air fryer’s size and model. Before serving, ensure it has been cooked to a safe internal temperature of 165ºF (74ºC).
  • DO NOT forget to remove the toothpicks before eating.
  • If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheating option, you can set the temperature to 380°F (193°C) and then let it cook for 4-5 minutes without food.
  • You can skip preheating by adding 2-4 minutes to your cooking time. Increment gradually to prevent burning the chicken cordon bleu.
  • I used a 6-quart (air fryer) to test the cordon bleu. Cooking time and temperature may vary depending on your air fryer and the number of servings you are making. For optimal results, begin with the lower end of the suggested cooking time.
