How to Cook Chicken Cordon Bleu in an Air Fryer?

While many steps are involved, believe it or not, this recipe is still a breeze to make. Simply follow these simple steps, and you’ll be golden.

Step 1: Set up the breading station first.

You need three shallow dishes for this. Add the following in each of the containers:

  1. All-purpose flour.
  2. Egg, crack, and beat it.
  3. Breadcrumbs and parmesan, whisk until uniform.

Step 2: Prepare the chicken.

Now, place a chicken breast on a clean cutting board. Carefully cut horizontally through the thickest part of the chicken breast. Do not cut all the way through; only until you can open up the chicken like a book.

Then, cover the chicken breast with a sheet of plastic wrap or wax paper. This’ll prevent any splatters.

Pound the chicken breast gently with a meat mallet or a rolling pin. Start from the thickest part of the chicken and work toward the edges. Continue pounding until the chicken breast is uniformly about 1/2 inch thick.

If the butterfly cut makes the chicken thin enough, you don’t have to pound it.

Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper. Then, place 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese on one side of each chicken breast.

Roll up the chicken breast and secure it with toothpicks to seal the edges. 

🚨 Important: Don’t forget to remove the toothpick later before serving.

Step 3: Preheat your air fryer to 380ºF (193ºC).

If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheating option, set your desired temperature then let it cook for 5 minutes without food.

🚨 Important: Reduce the cooking temperature to 380°F (193°C) if you’re using a 4-quart air fryer or smaller. They are hotter due to the heating element being closer to the food.

Step 4: Bread the Chicken.

Dip each rolled chicken breast into flour, coating it evenly. Shake off any excess.

Next, wet the chicken into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. Let any excess drip off before the next step.

Transfer the chicken to the breadcrumb mixture. Press the breadcrumbs to ensure it sticks to the chicken.

Step 5: Air Fry the Chicken Cordon Bleu for 20 – 25 minutes at 380ºF (193ºC).

Place the breaded chicken breasts in the air fryer, ensuring enough space between them for optimal air circulation. 

Then, spray with avocado oil. This simple step will enhance the appearance and elevate the overall texture and flavor of your Chicken Cordon Bleu. 

Cook for 20 – 25 minutes at 380ºF (193ºC), flipping them halfway through for even cooking.

🚨 Important: Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of the cordon bleu and the specific air fryer model you’re using.

Thus, keep an eye on your air fryer throughout the cooking time to prevent overcooking. It’s ready once your Chicken Cordon Bleu reaches that golden hue and the internal temperature reads 165°F (74°C).

💡 Pro Tip: If you have a meat thermometer, use it to check the internal temperature of the chicken. This way, you can be sure that your Chicken Cordon Bleu is perfectly cooked and safe to enjoy!

Step 6: Make the Cream Sauce:

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat until it’s beautifully melted.

Next, add the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. This helps create a smooth and flavorful base for our sauce. 

Fun fact: that combination is called roux, the common base for many delicious sauces like Béchamel. 

Gradually whisk in the milk, and watch as the sauce thickens and takes shape. Keep whisking to ensure a lump-free, velvety texture.

Once the milk is fully incorporated, add our star ingredient – dijon mustard! Pour in that tangy goodness and continue stirring until the sauce becomes lusciously creamy.

Step 7: Serve & enjoy!

You can also thaw the frozen cordon bleu in the refrigerator overnight. The next day, you can reheat the chicken in the preheated air fryer at 380ºF (193ºC) for 10 – 15 minutes or until it’s heated through and the breading turns crispy.

Fridge: Keep cooked leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, air fry at 380ºF (193ºC) for 10 – 15 minutes until heated through.

  • Season the butterflied chicken breasts with salt and pepper, ensuring both sides are evenly coated.
  • Add 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese to each chicken breast. Roll up the chicken and secure it with toothpicks to seal the edges.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 380ºF (193ºC).
  • Bread the chicken. Dip each chicken into the flour, shaking off excess. Next, dip into the beaten egg. Finally, transfer the chicken to the breadcrumb mixture, pressing the breadcrumbs to adhere.
  • Place the breaded chicken breasts in the air fryer, ensuring they don't overlap. Spray the breaded chicken breasts with avocado oil.
