How to Cook Turkey Burgers in an Air Fryer?

Turkey burgers are infamous for one thing: dry.

But worry not; we have a hidden gem in our Air Fryer Turkey Burger recipe. This secret ingredient works its magic, infusing every bite with moisture and flavor, transforming these burgers into a juicy delight you can’t resist.

Prepare to unlock the secret to the most delectable turkey burgers you’ve ever tasted!

Step 1: Preheat your air fryer to 400ºF (204ºC).

Preating Instant Pot Vortex Plus Air Fryer to 400°F (204°C).

If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheating option, set your desired temperature then let it cook for 5 minutes without food.

🚨 Important: Reduce the cooking temperature to 380°F (193°C) if you’re using a 4-quart air fryer or smaller. They are hotter due to the heating element being closer to the food.

Step 2: Prepare the ingredients.

Start by finely chopping the onions and mincing the garlic cloves.

Now, for that secret ingredient – cold butter! I guess it’s no longer a secret, as it’s listed as an ingredient above.

Anyway…

Grate some cold butter, half a stick if you follow the original recipe yielding two patties. If you’re making four turkey patties, use the whole butter stick.

This little addition will work wonders to keep your turkey burgers moist and juicy. The butter will melt as the burgers cook, infusing them with rich, indulgent flavors that delight every bite.

By the way, this butter idea is inspired by The Cooking Guy, so thank you, Sam.

Combine the ground turkey, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onions, garlic, and cold butter in a mixing bowl.

Oh, don’t forget to add the salt and pepper too.

Mix by hand until uniform. Then, shape into two* equal-sized patties. Aim for each patty to be about 1/2 inch (1.25cm) thick and wider than your burger bun. Creating uniform patties ensures even cooking and guarantees a delightful dining experience.

✦ It depends on how many patties you’ll make according to the recipe card.

Step 3: Air Fry the turkey burgers for 10 – 13 minutes at 400ºF (204ºC).

Carefully place the patties in the air fryer, leaving space for even cooking. Set the air fryer to 400ºF (204ºC) and cook for 10 to 13 minutes, flipping the patties halfway for that irresistible crispy exterior.

🚨 Important: Cook times will vary depending on many factors, but the two big ones are your patties’ thickness plus the air fryer’s model and size. Thus, it’s crucial to check the internal temperature for safe consumption.

Using an instant-read thermometer, insert the probe into the center of each patty. The turkey burgers should register an internal temperature of at least 165ºF (74ºC). This ensures that they are fully cooked and safe to enjoy.

💡 Pro Tip: You can melt cheese on the burger 2 minutes before it’s fully cooked.

Step 4: Assemble your turkey burger.

While the turkey patties cook, toast the hamburger buns to perfection.

Then, assemble the turkey burgers on the buns with your favorite toppings. Add lettuce, tomato slices, cheese, ketchup, and mayo to your taste.

If you’re in the mood for extra flavor, consider whipping up a quick sauce while the burgers cook. Try a simple aioli with mayo, minced garlic, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Step 5: Serve & Enjoy!

Freezing & Storage

Freezing: These Air Fryer Turkey Burgers can be frozen before cooking for a quick meal prep option. Place the uncooked patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze until firm. Transfer the frozen patties to a freezer-safe container or bag and label with the date. They’ll last up to 3 months in the freezer.

To cook from frozen, preheat your air fryer to 400ºF (204ºC) and cook the patties for 15 to 18 minutes, flipping once. Again, ensure their internal temperature reaches 165ºF (74ºC) before serving.

Fridge: Store leftover turkey burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They can last up to 3 days. Then, reheat in the air fryer at 350ºF (175ºC) for 5 to 7 minutes or until heated through.

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

  • Assemble your burger. Once the burgers are done, assemble them on the buns with your favorite toppings. Add some lettuce, tomato slices, cheese, ketchup, and mayo.

  • If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheating option, you can set the temperature to 380°F (193°C) and then let it cook for 4-5 minutes without food.
  • You can skip preheating by adding 2-4 minutes to your cooking time. Increment gradually to prevent burning the turkey burger.
  • I used a 6-quart (air fryer) to test the turkey burgers. Cooking time and temperature may vary depending on your air fryer and the number of servings you are making. For optimal results, begin with the lower end of the suggested cooking time.
