Air Fryer Ube Wontons are the dessert version of the amazingly delicious Air Fryer Crab Rangoon.

But instead of the savory crab meat filling, it’s oozing with creamy ube goodness.

Fun Fact: Ube is a purple yam that comes from the Philippines, and is growing in popularity around the world!

Sweeter than regular sweet potatoes, ube is purple throughout the flesh and is loaded with nutrients including fiber and antioxidants. They are mellow in flavor and work especially well in desserts.

The sweet and vegetal flavor of the ube is perfectly complemented by the tangy cream cheese. Wrapped in wonton dough and air-fried to golden-brown-and-delicious, ube makes for a unique and tasty Asian dessert.

Cream Cheese Ube Wonton Ingredients

Ingredients for cream cheese ube wontons.

You can find the exact measurements of the recipe ingredients and customize the serving size in the recipe card after the detailed step-by-step instructions section.

There aren’t too many ingredients needed for this recipe, and they can all be found at any Filipino grocery store, if your regular grocery store doesn’t have them all.

  • Wonton wrappers
  • Cream cheese, softened
  • Ube jam or ube halaya (purple yam jam)
  • Powdered sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • High heat cooking spray

Ube Halaya most commonly comes in a jar, so look for it near the other canned fruits and vegetables, or in the international aisle!

💡 Pro Tip: Be sure to use a cooking spray that doesn’t have propellant in it. Propellants in cooking sprays can damage air fryer baskets, so choose an oil spray that just has oil in the ingredients list.

How to Air Fry Cream Cheese Ube Wontons?

You’ll be shocked with how delicious such a simple recipe can be! Cream cheese ube wontons take less than 15 minutes to make, so they are a perfect treat for when you’re short on time.

Step 1: Prepare the ube filling.

Mixing cream cheese ube filling in a large glass bowl.

In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, ube halaya, powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Use a spatula to ensure the ingredients are evenly combined.

The softer the cream cheese is, the better!

Here are three methods to do it:

The first method is to let the cream cheese sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to an hour. However, the time required may vary depending on the temperature of your kitchen. In our case, as we do most of our shoots in the basement, this method didn’t work well for us.

Another way to soften cream cheese is to remove it from its packaging, place it in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave it on a low power setting for 15-20 seconds at a time, stirring in between until it reaches the desired softness.

Lastly, the quicker method would be to submerge the sealed cream cheese block in warm water and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, flipping it every 5 minutes or so.

Step 2: Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (190°C).

If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheating option, you can set the temperature to 370°F (190°C) and then let it cook for 5 minutes without food.

Step 3: Assemble the ube cream cheese wontons.

To prepare each wonton, first lay the wonton wrapper flat and have a small bowl of water nearby.

Add a heaping teaspoon of filling to the center of the wrapper, then lightly brush all four edges of the wrapper with water.

Fold in all four corners of the wrapper to the center to create a pouch-shape. Press each of the four seams to seal.

Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.

Step 4: Lightly spray or brush the dessert wontons with oil.

When all the wontons are assembled, lightly spray them with high-heat cooking oil, like avocado or canola oil.

The oil here is not necessary, but helps the wontons get extra crispy and golden.

💡 Pro Tip: Be sure to use a cooking spray that doesn’t have propellant in it. Propellants in cooking sprays can damage air fryer baskets, so choose an oil spray that just has oil in the ingredients list.

Step 5: Air fry ube wontons for 6 to 8 minutes.

When the air fryer is preheated, add the wontons in a single layer and air fry until golden brown and crisp, about 6 to 8 minutes.

Don’t worry about the oozing, it’s absolutely normal.

I used a 6-quart air fryer to test this recipe. Cooking time and temperature may vary depending on your air fryer and the number of servings you are making. For optimal results, begin with the lower end of the suggested cooking time.

Step 6: Serve and enjoy your air fried ube cream cheese wontons!

When the cream cheese ube wontons are crunchy and browned, remove them to a plate and dust with additional powdered sugar before serving!

Enjoy your delicious dessert wontons!

If you’re feeling decadent, feel free to dip these wontons into dulce de leche or caramel sauce!

They are sweet and delicious on their own, but a little caramel never hurt anyone 😉

Freezing & Storage

The air fryer ube wontons reheat better without the additional powdered sugar dusted on them, so if you’re planning to store them and then reheat, don’t dust them all with powdered sugar.

Freezing: Allow the wontons to cool completely before adding to an airtight container. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating following the instructions below.

Fridge: Once the wontons have cooled completely, add to an airtight container and store for up to 4 days.

Reheating: To reheat, add the wontons to an air fryer preheated to 370°F and air fry until heated-through and crisp, about 3-4 minutes.
